“It’s like if music makes you feel anything, it’s automatically sad or it’s a bummer and you totally neglect people who get joy out of addressing their sadness because it helps them be happier. You can’t listen to party music all the time, because life’s not always a party. You need to acknowledge the times when it’s not—that’s a well-rounded musical experience. Accept that life is complicated and sometimes music should reflect that. That’s part of what we try to do—make honest music and not be pandering or manipulative, just real. I think most people are complicated; most people have a lot of emotions and people who don’t have emotions are kind of weird. But that’s cool too; that’s a very real side of humanity—people have a difficult time feeling things, being open about them, and we’re just trying to explore all of it.”
